| The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture Author: Batchelor, Stephen. Published: August 1, 1994 Description: From Library Journal Unlike Rick Fields, whose How the Swans Came to the Lake (Shambhala, 1992. 3d ed.) focuses on American Buddhism, ex-Buddhist monk Batchelor (The Faith To Doubt, LJ 2/1/90) examines a broader canvas, surveying 2000 years of Western history. He finds but a handful of Europeans who were directly impressed by Buddhism; only during the last 150 years did any tangible "awakening" occur. While erudite, Batchelor's coverage is diffuse and uneven. Thus, while his chapter on Russian Buddhism is a captivating study of Kalmucks, reincarnated lamas, Stalinist purges, and perestroikan revival, his dismissal of theosophist Elena Blavatsky and painter Nicholas Roerich as "romantic fantasizers" is questionable. Urging Western modifications of Buddhist practice, Batchelor downplays the guru factor that produced an unbroken lineage from Gautama Buddha. Recommended for large collections only. Dara Eklund, Los Angeles P.L. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. | Boundless Healing: Mediation Exercises to Enlighten the Mind and Heal the Body Author: Thondup, Tulku. Published: October 17, 2000 Description: Amazon.com Esteemed author and teacher Tulku Thondup offers this convincing guidebook on healing the mind, body, and spirit through meditation. Although Thondup relies on the principles of Buddhism to explain the intimate connection between the mind and body, readers won't feel pressured to become budding Buddhists in order to learn these meditation techniques. In fact, what makes Boundless Healing so effective is Thondup's very detailed and nondogmatic style of teaching meditations. For example, when speaking to a meditation for healing sick cells, he stays focused on the physical and mental sensations, rather than flittering into ungrounded spiritual metaphors: "As your breath is moving through your body, think and feel that all the cells of your body are also breathing. All the trillions of cells of light and blissful heat are breathing from the top of your head to the soles of your feet." Devout Buddhists will find nourishing soul food in his one section devoted to specific Buddhist healing meditations. As for everyone else, Thondup has written an accessible, information-packed book that covers it all--from "Avoiding Expectations" to "Creating a Healing Aura While Sleeping" to "Meditations for the Dead or Dying" to "How Helpers and Survivors Should Behave." Regardless of the disease, discomfort, or desire, Thondup has a meditation up his sleeve, making this one of the most practical handbooks on healing meditations available. --Gail Hudson Review "Filled with ingenious and potent meditation exercises, Boundless Healing provides teachings on sources and benefits of healing, practical tips on meditating beneficially and rejoicing in progress, stages of meditation (on anatomical details of the body, cells as cells of light, feeling each cell as filled with healing energies, sharing the healing waves with others and the universe, etc.), healing with the colors of light, healing with the elements, mediations on the Healing Buddha's, healing meditations for the dying and the dead, and healing practices utilizing heat, bliss, light, breathing, the sound of AH, mantra, and more."--Banyen Books, Branches of Light. "Tulku Thondup was born in Tibet and studied at the Dodrupchen Monastery. He is the author of three previous books including "The Healing Power of the Mind." This immensely practical work spells out the wonders that can abound from tapping the riches of the mind-body connection. Using meditation exercises developed over the centuries in Tibetan Buddhism, Thondup demonstrates how they can help facilitate both peace of mind and physical well-being."--Frederic A. Brussat, Spirituality & Health. Keywords: Meditation -- Buddhism, Mind and body, Healing -- Religious aspects -- Buddhism Catalogue number: 1096 |

| Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism Author: Trungpa, Chogyam. Published: June 12, 1987 Description: Product Description The now classic Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism is the record of two series of lectures given by Trungpa Rinpoche in 1970-71. "First discussed are the various ways in which people involve themselves in spiritual materialism, the many forms of self-deception into which aspirants may fall. After this tour of the sidetracks along the way, the broad outlines of the true spiritual path are discussed. The approach presented is a classical Buddhist one--not in a formal sense, but in the sense of presenting the heart of the Buddhist approach to spirituality. Although the Buddhist way is not theistic, it does not contradict the theistic disciplines. Rather the differences between the ways are a matter of emphasis and method. The basic problems of spiritual materialism are common to all spiritual disciplines." Inside Flap Copy Examines the self-deceptions, distortions, and sidetracks that imperil the spiritual journey as well as awareness and fearlessness of the true path. | The Dzogchen Primer: An Anthology of Writings by Masters of the Great Perfection Author: Schmidt, Marcia Binder (Compiler). Published: July 23, 2002 Description: From Publishers Weekly (Tibetan Buddhism/Meditation)Dzogchen (pronounced Zog-chen), also known as The Great Perfection, is arguably the heart of Tibetan Buddhist meditation, and in this impressive collection Schmidt pulls together writings from historic and contemporary masters to facilitate study for serious, committed beginners and longtime practitioners. In 35 generally short essays, students can delve into topics such as Re-enlightenment and The True Foundation by recently deceased (1996) Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, who transmitted the complete teachings of the last century's three great masters and who has 10 passages here. They can also find more ancient voices such as the seventh century's Shantideva on the The Excellence of Bodhichitta, or Milarepa, one of Tibet's most famous yogis and poets, who lived 1,000 years ago, on The Song of Realization. This sequential manual is designed to aid individuals as well as Sangha or workshop leaders, and offers facilitator guidelines, a glossary, author profiles and a bibliography. This primer can help students without a teacher or meditation center, but the volume quickly points out that time in the presence of living masters is essential. Not a collection of academic ruminations, this important work also stresses application. As Ch^kyi Nyima Rinpoche says in the introduction, We do not need to let the teachings remain as mere words or ideas; we can put them to use in our own experience. This is how the buddha nature can be revealed, since it is already present in every one of us. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. | His Holiness the Dalai Lama: The Oral Biography Author: Strober, Deborah Hart. Published: July 4, 2005 Description: From Publishers Weekly The Strobers, who have written oral biographies of John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, use the same techniques here for an oral biography of Tibet's famous spiritual leader. They begin by offering brief profiles of the 54 interviewees, ranging from Western Buddhist VIPs like Robert Thurman, Jeffrey Hopkins and Lama Surya Das (an American convert from Judaism) to Tibetan lamas and monks, including Venerable Lama Thubten Zoba Rinpoche and Lama Lobsang Thamcho Nyima. (Refreshingly, this volume doesn't pander to Hollywood celebrities; Richard Gere is the only famous entertainer interviewed, and he has some genuinely insightful things to say.) The authors arrange the interviewees' snippets thematically, beginning with the lama's basic appeal and personal character before moving through his life chronologically, starting with his recognition as the Dalai Lama at the age of three. (About this, Thurman makes the helpful analogy that it's not only that the lamas are expected to be child prodigies and "little Mozarts," but also that they're believed to have "already written a million symphonies in ten previous lives.") The interviews then cover Chinese occupation and the exile to India, and the Dalai Lama's gradual rise to international fame. Some of the stories are humorous and light, while others are profoundly moving and personal. One of the great strengths of this book is that the interviewees are allowed to discuss the Tibetan political situation at some length, and to speculate on Tibet's evolving relationship with the Chinese government. His religious spirit and leadership have endeared him to his followers and to those of us who call him our friend. I hope many people will read this book and share our admiration of the Dalai Lama."-- Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana "A warm-hearted account of one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time."-- Lord George Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury "The Dalai Lama's warm embrace of all humanity places him among the greatest spiritual giants of our time. As a Christian leader who has met him several times, I honour his remarkable spiritual journey and commend this new biography." -- Lord George Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury "You too can know him, the great prophet of compassion whose grace touches us all."-- bell hooks, Distinguished Professor of English, City College, New York, author and contributor to the Shambala Sun "This biography presents a fascinating mosaic of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a multifaceted individual, viewed from the perspectives of a wide range of people who have encountered him over the past seventy years. The picture that emerges is the epitome of a sublimely balanced human being: with open-minded intelligence and unconditional compassion, an eagerness to engage with the world and a love of solitary meditation, embodying qualities of nobility and humility, of mature authority and childlike humor and playfulness. He is a complex man - a statesman and a holy man - who thinks of himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He inspires us all to become better people and to treat each other with love and respect, as he does with everyone he meets." -- B. Alan Wallace, author of Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment and President of the Santa Barbara Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of Consciousness Keywords: Bstan-dzin-rgya-mtsho, Dalai Lama XIV, 1935-, Dalai lamas -- Biography, Tibet (China) -- History Catalogue number: 1091 |

| Indestructible Truth: The Living Spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism Author: Ray, Reginald A.. Published: July 23, 2002 Description: This book is divided into 4 parts: The sacred environment, Tibet's story, core teachings, Buddhist philosophy Amazon.com Studying Tibetan Buddhism can be like entering a maelstrom of deities, rituals, and scriptures. In a new introduction to the history, the religion, and the philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism, Reginald Ray calms the storm and provides a compass for exploration. A professor and seasoned practitioner, Ray walks the line between objective historian and caring adviser. With spare precision and rich detail, he tells the story of Buddhism in Tibet, from its great progenitors in India to the larger than life transmitters to the series of schools that developed over the centuries. Ray makes no pretense at secularizing Tibetan Buddhism or diminishing its magical elements. He begins with the multifarious Tibetan cosmos but also covers the major tenets of Buddhism, emphasizing the living practices and their results. Capping the book, Ray devotes a section to the development of Buddhist philosophy, again displaying a knack for putting complex issues debated over centuries into just a few easy-to-understand paragraphs. It would be no exaggeration to say that indestructible truth is the best all-around introduction to Tibetan Buddhism you're likely to find. --Brian Bruya --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Publishers Weekly The tyro learning something about Buddhism will have noticed a trend in books: many are either about how to meditate or they're about theory. Fewer present Buddhist basics from the perspective of practice (that is, practice above and beyond meditation). Filling that gulch is this hefty volume by Ray, a Naropa University Buddhist studies professor, who presents ideas and actions, theory and practice. This book is distinguished by the author's comprehensive attention to detail. He explains both Buddhist cosmology and the history of Buddhism, and cogently outlines Geluk Buddhism, a line of monastic traditions from central Tibet. While many books focus exclusively on Geluk (which is a bit like using the example of Roman Catholicism to explain all of Christianity), Ray also explores non-Geluk practices, though he does not always flag a given practice as Geluk or other. There may be too much of a good thing here. History, doctrine, practice, Geluk, non-Geluk, the kitchen sink. The novice may easily lose the forest for the trees. Clearer chapter introductions would have gone a long way to ameliorating that problem, and a glossary would have been more helpful than the chronology of important dates appended to the book's end. Ray refers to, but never delves deeply into, Tantric Buddhism (but his announced Shambhala 2001 title promises to pick up where this book left off). This tome belongs primarily to the very devoted and the very knowledgeable. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
